Steve Johnson, director of the Alaskan Flower Essence Project, was certified in 2001 as a Practitioner of Interior Alignment and Instinctive Feng Shui by Denise Linn. For the past 5 years, Steve has been pioneering a new style of Space Clearing based on Denise’s teachings using the Alaskan Essences. More recently, Steve’s began to expand the scope of his work to include certain hydrosols and essential oils. We are now featuring a small selection of these products that have proven to be very effective when used by themselves or with our Sacred Space Sprays.
African Wild Sage
This special essential oil comes from John Steele and Lifetree Aromatics. The following description is in John’s words:
”The common name for this plant is Leleshwa. It is a small shrub common in the Great Rift valley of East and Southern Africa. Tests have shown that Leleshwa is extremely effective as an antiseptic, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal and natural detergent. Traditionally, the Leleshwa herb has been used to heal cuts and wounds, and is also used as a natural insect repellant by many tribes. It is also reported to have been used by traveling Sotho peoples to ward off evil influences whilst traveling through a strange country.”
”Leleshwa essential oil is extracted by steam distillation of the fresh leaves and flowers. The oil is pale yellow/green in color. The scent is herbaceous and floral with a distinct camphoraceous top note. It blends well with lavender, geranium, sandalwood, frankincense, cedar wood, ginger, clove, and pine.”
”The distillation process of Leleshwa is wholly organic and natural. Leleshwa wood and charcoal is used to fuel the boiler, which in turn produces the steam used to distill the fresh leaves and flowers.”
Space Clearing with African Wild Sage: This oil has a very strong capacity to clear old, stagnant predecessor energy from a room. It is also particularly effective in clearing residual odors that are “stuck” in the space, such as cigarette smoke and those that are left from cooking certain foods.
The undiluted oil is so powerful in this application that often all that is needed is to take the cap off the bottle and leave it sitting in the room for an hour or so. This is generally how I clear hotel rooms when traveling. When working in extremely toxic environments, anoint tissues or a cloth liberally with the undiluted oil and leave in the space. You can also prepare the oil as a spray by adding 5-10 drops, depending on the strength you want, to a spray bottle filled with water.
African Wild Sage can also be used during the invocation step of the process to bring in increased clarity and energy flow, and to support the creation of new boundaries in the space.

Frankincense Hydrosol

This wonderful hydrosol comes from John Steele of Lifetree Aromatics. John crafted the custom oil blends for our Calling All Angels, Guardian, and Purification sprays, and we purchase all of the oils used in our products from his company. The following description is taken from John’s words:
Properties and Applications
“This Frankincense hydrosol is custom made in the country of Oman. It has an extraordinary aroma and taste. When sprayed the scent is sweeter and warmer than the steam-distilled oil.”
“The first effect is of energetic expansion. Taking a drop or two undiluted gives the distinct sensation that the energy body is expanding, rapidly, from the solar plexus. Try it before meditation, in ritual work, or in any form of energy healing.
“The oil is known to deepen and expand breathing and open airways, and the hydrosol seems to retain that property. In “aromapuncture” treatments, one drop of frankincense on the lung points elicited a deep breathing that manifested an altered state almost on contact.
“Topically, Frankincense is fantastic on the skin. Mist over the face and leave it to air dry and your skin will have a noticeably finer texture almost immediately.
Space Clearing with the Frankincense Hydrosol
The Frankincense hydrosol is a very versatile space clearing tool that has the power to cut through very old predecessor energy, as well as energy blockages affecting any of the elements (air, earth, fire, or water). It can also be used for the preservation step of the clearing process.
This hydrosol is very powerful! When it is indicated in a space clearing, I usually use no more than four sprays for an entire room. I spray once in each corner and once in the middle of the room. The effect is gradual, very expansive, and at the same time very grounding.

Sweetgrass Hydrosol
Hierochloe odorata
Sweetgrass is found growing across the prairies of North America, in boreal regions, and right up into Alaska and the Canadian Arctic. It is circumpolar in distribution, and can be found in Greenland, Iceland, northern Europe and Asia.
The burning of Sweetgrass for ceremonial purposes has long been part of the native culture in North America, but the historical use of the plant extends to many cultures around the world. Sweetgrass was once used in Europe as a strewing herb where it was laid at the entrance to churches especially on saints’ days. In fact, the practice of using the grass in European churches gave rise to the botanical name Hierochloe or Holy grass.
The scent of Sweetgrass is distinctive. It is reminiscent of a fresh spring rain on the prairie or new mown hay. The dried grass is used to scent pillows, clothing, and for weaving baskets. The aroma becomes more pronounced when the grass is dried, and it can last for many years.
The distillation of Sweetgrass does not yield any essential oil but it does produce a beautiful hydrosol. Sweetgrass Hydrosol can be misted into the air as a liquid smudge where the burning of Sweetgrass braids is not allowed such as in hospitals or other public places where smoking is not permitted. It also makes a beautiful deodorizer for rooms and vehicles, either alone or when blended with other essential oils.
Using the Sweetgrass Hydrosol in Space Clearing
This wonderful hydrosol comes from a company called Herbs North in Edmonton, Alberta. It is harvested and distilled north of the city on the southern edge of the great boreal forest of Canada. I was very excited to find this product, having researched the powerful cleansing properties of our own Sweetgrass flower essence, which is one of the main ingredients in our Purification spray.
I have used the Sweetgrass Hydrosol in every Space Clearing job I have done since I discovered it. Its action is gentle but strong, and it excels in removing old energetic debris from a space, on any level. It works in a similar way as the flower essence, helping to “sweep up” any residual energy left from previous cycles of activity. It can also be used as an invocation spray to bring a fresh new energy into a space once it has been cleared. In either case, its wonderful scent lingers for quite a long time.

Shelf Life
The shelf lives of hydrosols differ and as this is a newly emerging field of vibrational healing, information is still coming in. I have stored shrink-wrapped bottles of the Sweetgrass Hydrosol for over a year with no problems, but once opened, the bottle should be used up within 6 months. In any case, always store the hydrosol in a cool dark place.
White Sage Hydrosol
Salvia apiana
This powerful hydrosol comes from John Steele’s Lifetree Aromatics. The following description is taken from John’s words:
“The fragrance of this hydrosol is very powerful; a very intense mixture of sage and rosemary, but much stronger than either. Although the flavor is nice, I do not recommend this hydrosol for internal use. Its sphere of activity is energetic.”
“This hydrosol is from the same desert sage that has been used by Native Americans and others for rituals, smudging, and healing as far back as traditions go. The energy field of this hydrosol is amazing! Use it as a smudge or mist for the aura, to cleanse crystals and other healing tools, and apply by anointing to the chakras and energy points of the body.”
Space Clearing with the White Sage Hydrosol
I have just begun to use this hydrosol in my Space Clearing work, but the initial results have been extraordinary. It is very immediate in its effect, and in most cases very little of it is needed. Its action is similar to smudging with sage, but without the smoke and burning embers, and much more concentrated.
